GCSE Brief, Context and Mind Map
Brief, Context and Mind Mapping: The main part of the page is a brain storm. Write down everything you can think of to do with your project. Group them together into headings. These might include: materials, colours, finishes, health & safety, who will use it, where will it be used, unknowns (what do you need to find out), size. The other headings on the page are self explanatory.

GCSE Example Planning
Firstly explain why planning is important in industry. Big projects must be completed on time - if they are not it could cost the company millions (The Airbus Superjumbo or Wembley Stadium are two good examples which you could write about, briefly). Your project will last many weeks and you need to be able to plan ahead - to do this you will use a Gant Chart. In the main panel you need to do a Gant chart - use Microsoft Publisher and use the table maker - Months across the top, jobs down the left hand column.

GCSE Example Image Board
This is not a collection of pictures of similar products to the one you want to make. It is supposed to create a clear picture of the type of person who will buy your product, who will use it, what kind of lifestyle they might lead etc. For example, if you are doing the toy, you can include a few toys but there should also be pictures of happy smiley kids, grandparents, nice friendly houses, other products (childrens bedrooms). Arrange them nicely on the page and just explain that a designer uses an image board to understand who they are designing for - to give them a window into the lifestyle of their potential customers.

GCSE Example Logos and Branding
On this sheet you look at existing logos and then design your own logo. In the left hand panel choose 3 very different logos and paste them in. Perhaps one that uses words (Coca-Cola), one that uses symbolism (Jaguar Cars) and one that is fairly abstract (BMW). Analyse each one by writing notes either under or around each one. In the main panel sketch or make up on the computer 3 logos of your own. They should capture the feel of the project. Write some notes next to each one saying what you like and dislike about each one. Choose the one you prefer and either scan it or copy and paste into the top title of each of your sheets.

GCSE Example Projecting Brand
Use your logo to produce the following images (These are only suggestions). Key Ring, Graphics on a lorry or aeroplane, Headed note paper, Card package, including all the stuff you would expect to find on a package, T-Shirt, business card, carrier bag. You will probably need to do this in Photoshop Elements.

GCSE Example Analysis of Existing Products
In the main panel you need to produce a nicely coloured drawing of a toy. This is mounted onto a computer generated background panel, graduated, rounded corners. Then, in the remaining panel find out about injection moulding - include a diagram.

GCSE Example Specification
A list of targets which your project must achieve. Dont be too specific about what you are going to do e.g. if you want to do an aeroplane say and want to design and make a small toy with a theme of machines. If you want do a piece of furniture say I want to design and make a piece of furniture suitable for a childs bedroom (age 8 to 11). I suggest you use 3 headings - The Product itself; Materials & Finishes; Manufacturing Processes.
In the right hand panel you need to say how you will know if you have met the specification - this will be by asking the opinion of others (experts, buyers, users); by testing the function and durability of the product (does it break, how strong is it) and finally by carrying out your own evaluation against your specification.

GCSE Example Design Ideas
You need two sheets with about 6 to 8 ideas in all. Try not to divide the page with lines - just use them as a guide. Your ideas need to be very different from each other (don't fall into the trap of doing development - just one of each design).Use coloured pencils and colour some in. On some do the blocking around it.
Write some simple notes around the sketches saying what it is, what you like about it and what might be problematic. You could also explain what you want to do which is not clear in sketch (motors, batteries, what extra features it might have).
BE CREATIVE!

GCSE Example Design Development 1
Choose your best ideas and develop it further. This section focuses on improving your idea and refining its looks and suitability to solve the brief. This sheet should include a combination of sketches and annotations that fully explain how you have developed your design idea further.

GCSE Example 3D Modelling
On your 3D modelling sheet you should show photographs of the model you have made. You should write about the materials you have used to make the parts of your prototype and any difficulties that you have come across when making your model. You should also try to show evidence of some testing.
If your product is a toy it would be a good idea to test the proportions and functions of the toy or if your product is a piece of furniture you should test its ergonomics.

GCSE Example Design Development 2
The second design development sheet shows the final adjustments and finer details of your design. It should include any changes that you have made as a result of testing your model, changes in materials, details of the construction of your product etc.
It should show all of the developments clearly and make it clear that your idea has been carefully thought through.

GCSE Example Final Design
Arguably the most important design sheet. This sheet shows the product that you intend to make. It should provide enough information for another person to be able to manufacture the product. Be sure to include detailed dimensions, materials and enough views to make every aspect of the design clear.
As detail and accuracy are crucial in this section of work, use drawing techniques not sketching when producing your final idea.

GCSE Example Materials and Finishes
This section shows all of the materials and the finishes that you have considered for your product. You must make it clear which materials and finishes you have chosen to use for the different parts of your design. Try to explain why you have chosen to use that type of material and apply that finish (e.g. I have chosen to use reclaimed oak for the shelves in my product as this material is not expensive and using reclaimed material is environmentally friendly. I have chosen to apply a Danish oil finish to the shelves as this provides a protective finish that enhances the natural beauty of the material).

GCSE Example CAD CAM
Explain how you will use Computer Aided Design to help you refine your design and produce a 3D computer drawing of your idea before you start the making stages. You must then explain how you will use CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) to make some of the parts of your product.
Show the reasons for your choices and explain why you are using either the CNC Laser cutter or the CNC 3D router. You can use images to show the machine or machines you will use

GCSE Example Pro Desktop
Pro Desktop is a 3D CAD package which can be used to make three dimensional drawings of any design. If you are having difficulties see your teacher and use the D&T Departments Pro Desktop help sheets in this section. You must use it to produce a 3D CAD drawing of your design.
Once you have produced the design render the CAD drawing to make it appear as life like as possible. To go even further whey not use graphics software in school like Photoshop or Publisher to show your design in the context it will be used

GCSE Example Making Dairy
Your making diary records all of the main stages of manufacture. Use digital photographs and notes to show all of the main stages you have gone through to make your product. These should be shown in the order you do the processes and the notes should mention any health and safety considerations you have made.
Be sure to include all of the making stages otherwise you will not get credit for all f the skills that you have developed

GCSE Example QA and QC
Show what measures you have taken to ensure that your product is of a high standard of quality. Explain what the term quality means and why all manufactures try to achieve a high standard of quality.
Talk about what checks you have put in place to ensure your product meets your high standards and compare this to how checks may be made in industry.

GCSE Example Cutting List and Flow Chart
You will have many components that are required to assemble your design. Some of the parts you need may be made from different materials and many will be different sizes. Produce a cutting list (a table) to show all of the material and components you will be using.
Include a flow chart on this sheet which illustrates how you will make your product and when make relevant checks.

GCSE Example Social and Environment Issues
Does your product have an impact on the environment? Is it a positive impact or a negative one? Explore all of the environmental issues associated with the production of your design. A good starting point is to look at the materials you have used.
Identify any social issues and considerations that you have made when designing and making the solution to your brief.

GCSE Example Evaluation 1
On your first evaluation sheet you must evaluated your product against your specification. Use each specification point and assess how successful your product is in meeting this point. Be critical and be honest you will gain extra credit for realising your strengths and the areas in which you need to improve your product.
Please select the image to the left, this will open a PDF version of the Coursework Sheet for:
GCSE Example Evaluation 2
On the second evaluation sheet you should generally sum up the strengths and weaknesses of your design. You should then suggest any improvements that could be made to your final design and show any necessary changes with sketches.

GCSE Example Packaging and Other
On this sheet show how you would package your product if it was to be sold commercially. You can do this either by designing a suitable package or by making a miniature version of your packaging and including it in this section of your folder. If you have any other supporting work for your project, include them at the end of your design portfolio.
